All the Eggo Waffles, Ranked

Publish date: 2024-05-26

We wouldn’t have Eggo waffles without mayonnaise. Here’s the story: A trio of brothers (Anthony, Sam, and Frank Dorsa) came up with the concept of frozen waffles and released them to the market in 1953. Though they were originally called Froffles (frozen + waffles), the name soon changed to Eggo—the brand under which the brothers were selling mayonnaise made with “fresh ranch eggs.”

What a fun fact to bore your children with over a breakfast of hot-from-the-toaster frozen Eggo waffles.

Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the history of Eggo waffles. We’re here to rank them. I toasted (or didn’t toast if the package directed otherwise) every Eggo waffle I could find in order to find the very best Eggo waffles. Someone tell Eleven from Stranger Things, because here’s pretty much every Eggo waffle flavor, ranked.

Unlike Sporked contributor Naajia Shukri, I don’t like fake strawberry. It reminds me of the fluoride foam at my childhood dentist’s office. Not a particularly pleasant memory. That said, there’s not a whole lot of strawberry flavor—fake or otherwise—in this waffle, anyway. So even if you love fake strawberry, you’ll still be disappointed. It’s just a real “meh” of a waffle.

Homestyle Eggo

There is nothing wrong with a Homestyle Eggo. It’s very good and a little sweet. It tastes like there’s a little bit of maple syrup in mix. Yum! There just happens to be better Eggo waffles out there. But you’ll be perfectly satisfied with a Homestyle.

Eggo Mini Homestyle

For some reason, the Eggo Mini Waffles (Homestyle) are better than the regular size. These little guys have even more of a pronounced maple-y sweetness than their bigger brothers. Plus, they’re just so cute and fun to eat.

Eggo Liege-Style Strawberry

The Liege-Style waffles are a new addition to the Eggo line-up and I am very happy they’ve joined the party. Liege waffles are a Belgian treat eaten as a snack at any time of day. They’re traditionally made with a yeast dough much like a brioche bread, and they’re studded with pearl sugar, which crystallizes during cooking, adding crunchy explosions of sweetness. I’ve never had a real liege waffle, but I can tell you that Eggo’s version is exceptional—both the maple flavor, which you’ll see later, and the strawberry flavor. The package directs you to simply let the waffle thaw out of the freezer and then eat. I was skeptical, but the texture is so good—nice and chewy, almost like pound cake. The strawberry flavor is good and not overly artificial. It’s the perfect sweet snack to throw into your bag.

Eggo Mini Cinnamon Toast

“I just love it,” said managing editor Gwynedd Stuart as she took bites of these Eggo Mini waffles. Shaped like little toast squares, they’re extremely cute and not too sweet. There’s really just the perfect hint of sweetness and a nice, cozy dusting of cinnamon. Add some butter and you’re starting the day so very right.

Eggo Thick and Fluffy Blueberry

Eggo Thick and Fluffy waffles have an incredible floof-to-crunch ratio. The outside is nicely crunchy, and then there’s chewy sections in the nexuses where the gridlines meet. The blueberry-flavored Thick and Fluffies are infused with a nice faux blueberry flavor (think: blueberry bagel) and there are actual pieces of blueberry in there. If you like blueberry bagels, try these Eggo waffles ASAP.

Buttermilk Eggo Waffles

The Buttermilk Eggo is so much better than the Homestyle Eggo (which, if you remember, was still quite good). To me, this is classic Eggo flavor. It has a touch of that buttermilk tang. “Unbelievable flavor compared to the original,” Gwynedd said. The only downside is that you need to eat this warm. It loses its appeal the second it gets to room temp.

Eggo Liege-Style Buttery Maple Flavor

This was just an incredible Eggo waffle. The sugar crystals are more evident in this one than they were in the strawberry Liege-Style. It tastes like it’s drenched in maple syrup. The texture is toothsome and tender. I wrote in my notes that I would be thinking about this Eggo waffle for a long time and I was right—I am still thinking about it now. The only reason this is not taking the top spot is because I cannot in good faith recommend you eat this for breakfast. This is an afternoon waffle, and that just isn’t what Eggo waffles are in their purest essence.

“This is one of the best waffles I’ve ever had,” said Gwynedd. Not best Eggo waffle—best waffle, full stop. I completely agree. One bite and you’re instantly transported to a cozy cabin in the woods. What a gosh darn treat. It’s not too sweet. It tastes like there’s just a sprinkling of brown sugar and cinnamon in the batter. And, once again, you have those good, floofy moments. Grown-ups will love it. Kids will love it. I will love it. Please buy me these Eggo waffles.
